In today's world, representation in the Arts is perhaps more important than ever before. Classical Music is not one-dimensional, but multi-faceted, reflecting diverse perspectives and experiences that shape our past, present, and future. Although frequently overlooked, African-American composers have generously contributed to the landscape of Classical Music. Their work often reflects their culture and history- from the rhythms of Africa to the spirituals, blues, jazz, and gospel stylings of the South. As performing artists, educators, and students consider how to approach diversity in their respective roles, the biggest challenge is perhaps knowing where to start. Who are the composers? What influences their music? What performance practices are associated with their work? What are effective ways to teach their music? This lecture answers these questions and more, providing a starting point for anyone interested in exploring music of African-American composers. African-American composers have a rich legacy everyone can enjoy.
Artists spend countless hours in the practice room perfecting their craft so they can walk onstage and deliver spellbinding performances. In the practice room, they plant the seeds of imagination, but how can these seeds grow to become a successful live project? In this presentation, Tami shares about her experience launching The Legacy Show- from inception to seasons of national tours. She provides insight about the modern music industry, marketing, and more. The sky is the limit if artists know how to get there!
